BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University softball team wrapped up its three-game set vs. McMurry University on Sunday afternoon. A late three-run seventh inning from the Warhawks gave them a 5-3 victory.
The game was pushed back to a Sunday start due to weather conditions on Saturday and Howard Payne looked good to start the game. Scoring one run in the bottom of the first on a nifty double steal that brought Jones across the plate to put HPU up 1-0.
The Lady Jackets would collect two more runs in the second after a
Bri Davis double scored
Gabrielle Roque and
Kendra Evans followed with a single up the middle to score Davis and give HPU a 3-0 lead.
McMurry would respond by getting one run across the plate in the top of the third inning to make it 3-1 and both sides would go on to swap a scoreless sixth inning.Â
The Warhawks then were able to put runners into scoring position and overcome the 3-2 deficit with their three-run top of the seventh. Cheyanne West settled in and closed out the side to help McMurry register the 5-3 victory.
Kayla Boucher finished 2-3 from the plate with a double and
Bri Davis scored one run and batted in another while finishing 1-3 with a double.
Kendra Evans delivered just over four innings of solid play in the circle, finishing with two strikeouts an unearned run while facing 21 batters.
