BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University football team improved to 1-1 on the year with a 37-31 double overtime victory over the War Hawks of McMurry University Saturday evening at Gordon Wood Stadium.
In a game that feature a near 2 hour lightning delay, Howard Payne racked up 411 yards of total offense which included 265 yards through the air.Â

Gage McClanahan was 16 of 32 passing for passing for 265 yards four touchdowns, one rushing touchdown and one interception. Running backÂ
Kaidrion Latson had 26 carries for 126 yards for the Yellow Jackets.
DunTayviun Gross led the HPU receiving crew with five catches for 103 yards and a TD. He also had two punt returns for 46 yards.
Thomas Williams followed with four catches for 73 yards and two TDs.Â
Austin Killgore led the Jackets with 13 tackles with
Collin Wright adding 11 total tackles with 1.5 sacks (-14 yds).
Tevin Dawson followed with 9 tackles with two pass breakups.
The Jackets would score right before the delay on a McClanahan 58 yard pass to
DunTayviun Gross to give the Jackets a 14-10 advantage after the Gonzalez extra point.
After the lightning delay the Jackets came out of the locker room strong gaining a stop on defense and then finding the endzone before the end of the 2nd quarter. This time McClanahan found
Thomas Williams and 15 yard TD reception giving the Jackets a 21-10 lead.
The War Hawks pulled to within four in the 3rd quarter on a TD reception but the Jackets would answer at the beginning of the fourth when Cristain Gonzalez connected on a 39 yard field goal with 11:36 left in regulation.
Just over a minute later McMurry scored on an 80 yard reception to tie the game at 24-24. A later game drive by the Jackets would stall out in War Hawk territory and the two teams went to overtime.
Both teams scored touchdowns in the first overtime. HPU's
Jordan Bryant hauled in a 25 yard McClanahan pass. After a failed attempt by McMurry, McClanahan threw his fourth TD of the game, a 22 yard pass to
Thomas Williams for the game winning.
This was also the first double OT game in the American Southwest Conference since Hardin-Simmons and Texas Lutheran on November 11th of 2012.
Howard Payne is now 1-1 overall while McMurry falls to 0-3 on the season. The Yellow Jackets will play in Abilene next Saturday at Hardin-Simmons University. It will be a 6:00 pm kickoff.Â
