ABILENE, Texas – The Howard Payne University women's basketball team got a 29-point performance from sophomore guard
Chelsey Harris to defeat McMurry University 67-63 Saturday afternoon at Kimbrell Arena.
Despite 50% (15 of 30) shooting from the free-throw line for Howard Payne, the Lady Jackets used 63% shooting from the field in the fourth to hold off McMurry for HPU's sixth win of the season.
Down 18-13 in the second period, the Lady Jackets used a 9-0 run to gain a 22-18 lead with 5:20 left till half. But McMurry rallied to hold a 33-31 lead at the halftime break.
Down six midway through the fourth quarter, the Lady Jacket use a 11-0 run to gain an 61-56 advantage with less than 2 minutes to play.
Payge Grable hit 4 of 4 free-throws down the stretch for the Lady Jackets to hold off the McMurry push and claim the 67-63 conference victory.
Harris scored her game-high 29 points on 10 of 16 shooting, 4 of 6 from behind the arc.
Payge Grable had 11 points and
Anastasia Willis finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Chelsi Woodard grabbed nine rebounds along with a game high five blocks off the bench.
McMurry was led by Skyler Reyna with 15 points and 10 rebounds followed by Isabel Carrion with 13 points.
Howard Payne is now 3-6 in American Southwest Conference play and 6-12 overall. McMurry is 3-7 in league action and 6-13 on the year. The Lady Jackets will play next at home on Thursday versus Mary Hardin-Baylor at 5:30 pm in the Brownwood Coliseum.
