Football Falls Short Against Louisiana College

BROWNWOOD, Texas - A late game drive be Louisiana College proved to be the difference in a 27-21 loss for the Howard Payne University football team Saturday afternoon at Gordon Wood Stadium.

Louisiana College would score with 45 second left in the game to give the Wildcats the 27-21 lead over Howard Payne after a blocked extra point by Yellow Jackets. 

Howard Payne would strike first in the game on its opening drive with a nine-yard run by Cameron Keener that capped a 12 play, 75 yard drive by the Yellow Jackets. 

After the Wildcats scored on their opening drive, the Jackets closed out the first half with a Shannon Warren two-yard run with 2:40 left to give HPU a 14-7 halftime lead.

The Wildcats scored twice in the third quarter to gain a 21-14 advantage with 2:24 left in the third period. 

The Jackets then tied the game a 21-21 on a DunTayvion Gross 23 yard TD reception from Caleb Estes with 13:52 left in the game. It capped an eight play, 75 yard drive for the Yellow Jackets.

The Yellow Jackets allowed 406 yards (135 rushing, 271 passing) of total offense while posting 346 themselves (109 rushing, 237 passing). It was two interception and one fumble lost by the Jackets that would prove to be the difference in the game.

Caleb Estes was 19 of 30 passing for the Jackets for 237 yards, one TD and two interceptions. Shannon Warren led the HPU running attack with 51 yards on 12 carries and one TD.

DunTayvion Gross finished with seven catches for 64 yards, one TD and Jordan Bryant had three catches for 62 yards.

HPU's Dylan Zeno led all tacklers with 10 and Britt Boler finished with eight tackles, one for loss and two pass breakups. James Jakubowski and Michael Davis each recorded a sack for the Jackets. Jarett Brown and John Anderson each also had two pass breakups for the Jackets.

HPU's McGwire Martin had five punts for 217 yards (43.4) a long of 58 yards and two inside the 20 with a touchback.

Howard Payne is now 2-3 overall and 1-3 in American Southwest Conference play. Louisiana College stands at 2-3 overall and is 2-2 in league action. The Jackets will have an open date next weekend and will be back in action at home on October 19th versus Texas Lutheran University at 1:00 pm.
