Luke Cox Breaks HPU 3-point Record At DBU

DALLAS, Texas - Howard Payne University's Luke Cox hit eight three-pointers in a 103-75 loss to DII #13 Dallas Baptist University Saturday afternoon in non-conference play.

HPU's Luke Cox when 8 of 8 from behind the arc breaking the HPU record of seven three-pointers in a game. Seven 3-pointers had been posted four times in HPU history by three different players, Ryan Tomlin (1996), Josh Weatherred (2006) and Khyce Randall (twice-2017, 2018).

Luke Cox also tied the American Southwest Conference record for three-point field goal pct. (1.000, 8 of 8). it had been previously done by Joe Hoeup of Hardin-Simmons in Nov. of 2018.

The Yellow Jackets had a solid shooting night connecting on 48.4% (30 of 62) of their shots and 57.1% (12 of 21) from the three-point line.

The difference in that game came on the boards with DBU out rebounding the Howard Payne 39-26. DBU also recorded 19 more free-throw attempts than HPU, 3-for-7 for HPU, 23-for-26 for DBU.

With the halftime score 44-33, HPU cut the DBU lead to eight points at the opening of the second half on a Luke Cox three-pointer.

The Patriots would push their advantage to 15 plus a couple of times with the Jackets rallying each time to single digits. With minutes left, DBU put together one last run and posted the 103-75 final.

HPU's Luke Cox led all scorers with career high 27 points on 10 of 17 shooting from the field. Jase Miguez followed with 13 points on 5 of 10 shooting. Jaylan Ballou had his best all around game as a Jacket so far with eight points, six rebounds and 10 assists.

Conner Lidiak finished with 22 points for DBU followed by Chandler Jacobs with 19 and 11 rebounds.

Howard Payne is now 1-7 overall and Dallas Baptist stands at 9-0 on the year. The Jackets will play next on Monday, Dec. 16th in Houston, Texas versus the University of St. Thomas at 7:30 pm.
