BROWNWOOD- The Howard Payne University softball team wrapped up day one of its weekend series with a 9-5 loss to Belhaven University on the road earlier this afternoon, Game two was postponed due to darkness and will be continued Saturday morning at 10:00 am.

In game one, Hailey Slater was able to get HPU's first hit of the day in the top of the 5th inning. This was followed by Reagan Noriega reaching on an error, advancing pinch runner Madison Love to third. Aurora Luera then reached on an error allowing both Noriega and Love to score.

Later in the fifth, Kayla Hill smashed her third homer of the year to bring in three more runs for the HPU, now 5-2 Lady Jackets.

Belhaven then added two runs on a two-run homer to make the score 5-4 in the bottom of the inning. The Blazers would add two more multi-run homers in the sixth to bring the ending score to 9-5. 

Tia Campos recorded the loss on the mound for the Lady Jackets. Audrey Simpson also saw 2/3 inning of action.

The Lady Jackets are now 3-2 in the season and 0-1 in American Southwest conference play, while Belhaven are now 3-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The Lady Jackets will continue this weekend's series tomorrow, Saturday February 16th starting at 10 AM in  Jackson, Mississippi.
