JACKSON, Miss - The Howard Payne University softball team won the last two games of their three game series against Belhaven earlier Saturday afternoon with a 7-6 win in game one and a 10-3 in game two.
In game one, which was a continuation of day two of the Friday double header delayed by darkness,
Aurora Luera in the top of the 3rd inning scored on an error to put HPU up in the game. Belhaven fought back in the bottom of the 3rd bringing in five runs.
The Lady Jackets were able to fight their way back throughout the game earning tying the game in the top of the 6th with a run in by
Alexis Sullivan and a two-run homer by
Emily Martinez. It was a solo homer by
Haley Slater that gave the Lady Jackets the 7-6 final.
Gabrielle Roque gained the win for the Lady Jackets, with
Hannah Stuart starting in the circle for two innings and
Audrey Simpson to follow with one inning.
In game two, the Lady Jacket's gained the 10-3 victory out hitting Belhaven 13-10.
The Lady Jackets were able to score in the top of the first inning with hits from
Alexis Sullivan and
Tonya Thompson.
Kayla Anderson was able to bring in Reagan Noriega and Hailey Slater for two runs in the top of the 4th inning off a double to center field.
The Lady Jackets held off Belhaven till the bottom of the 5th, where Belhaven was able to bring in two runs on a homer to left center.
Tia Campos earned the win for Howard Payne pitching three innings, followed by
Hannah Stuart pitching for 2.1 innings and
Audrey Simpson ending the game pitching 1.2 innings.
Howard Payne is now 4-3 overall and 2-1 in American Southwest Conference play, while Belhaven is now 3-2 overall and 1-2 in conference play. The Lady Jackets will play a double header this Friday, February 22nd  against Louisiana College at Lady Jacket Field in Brownwood at 1 P.M. and 3 P.M.  Â
