Jackets Add to ASC Lead, Split with Lobos

Brownwood, Texas – The Jackets took one of two games on Saturday afternoon, dropping game one 8-4 and winning game two 10-5 against the visiting Sul Ross State Lobos.

HPU went up first, scoring one run in each of the first two innings, one run thanks to a Ty McCain SAC fly.

Sul Ross then took the lead with a 4 run 4th, and extended that lead to 8-2 after a 3 run 6th.

The Jackets would knock in two more runs of their own thanks to a Cliff Lunceford single that scored David Groves, and then a Noah Payne single that plated Jacob Rodriguez.

Noah Payne and Jacob Rodriguez both went 2-3 with a double, RBI, and a run scored.

Bryson Lyro got the loss for the Jackets going 5 innings, giving up 6 hits, 5 runs and striking out 2. Ryan Richardson and Graham White had clean appearances on the mound.

Game Two

The second game of the doubleheader was a much better scoring affair for the Jackets, breaking double digit runs for the 8th time this season.

HPU scored 3 in the 1st, one on an RBI walk by RJ Roberts that scored Noah Payne. Then the Lobos put up 3 runs of their own in the 3rd to tie it up.

HPU started to pull away in the 4th after Cliff Lunceford singled home Jacob Rodriguez, and Noah Payne blasted an inside the park homerun to left center scoring himself and Lunceford.

The Lobos battled back within two making the score 7-5, but the Jackets would score again in the 6th on a Ty McCain single, plating Joshua Gerig, making it 8-5. Then in the 8th, Manny Torralba put the game away with a double that scored Rylee McGee and pinch runner Seth Heupel.

Joshua Gerig led the Jackets at the plate going 3-4 with a walk, and scoring one run. Rylee McGee, Noah Payne and Manny Torralba all had 2 RBIs.

Preston Newman got the start on the mound tossing 4.1 innings, giving up 7 hits and 4 runs while striking out 3. Johnny Cravey grabbed the win, finishing out the 5th inning, giving up 1 hit and 1 run while striking out 1.

The Jackets improved to 19-10 on the season, now at 13-2 in the ASC. Sul Ross moved to 12-12 on the year and 8-4 in ASC play. They will be on the road this Tuesday night against Southwestern University in Georgetown. The first pitch will be at 6:00 pm.
