BROWNWOOD- The Howard Payne University's softball team split today's double header with Hardin-Simmons University to win the series, losing game one 8-6 and winning game two 11-7.
Game one
After a four-run top of the second for Hardin-Simmons, the Lady Jackets were able to tie the game in the bottom of the second inning off of hits from
Aurora Luera and
Alexis Sullivan, making the score 4-4.
With HPU leading 6-4 following a two-run RBI triple from
Alexis Sullivan in the fourth, Hardin-Simmons took the lead with runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh to claim the game 8-6.
Lady Jacket
Tia Campos started in the circle for the HPU pitching four innings, allowing five runs on nine hits.
Hannah Stuart and
Audrey Simpson both saw time on the mound, though
Gabrielle Roque recorded the loss allowing a run to come in at the top of the 6th, making the score 7-6
Alexis Sullivan finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs,
Aurora Luera was 2-for 4 in the game.
Game two
The Lady Jackets started the second game hot ending the first inning leading 6-4.
Aurora Luera and
Tonya Thompson were brought in off of a double to left center from
Alexis Sullivan to put HPU on the board in the first inning.
Kayla Hill,
Kayla Anderson and Regan Noriega all recorded a hit and scored to end the first.
HSU was able to bring in two runs in the top of the sixth inning off of a homerun.
The game ws all Lady Jackets with four recording multiple hits.
Haley Slater finished 4-for-4 at the plate and Sullivan was 3-for-4 finishing 6-for-8 with six RBIs on the day.
Hannah Stuart started on the mound earning the win, being able to keep HSU at only four runs for four innings, earning one strike out.
Audrey Simpson ended the game in the circle for the Yellow Jackets, ending the game 11-7.
Howard Payne is now 13-16 overall and 9-12 in American Southwest Conference play, while Hardin-Simmons is now 16-15 overall and 11-7 in conference. HPU will play at home next Tuesday, April 9th in a non-conference double header against Our Lady of the Lake University starting at 1 P.M. at Lady Jacket Park.
