BROWNWOOD, Texas - Howard Payne University's
Joey Villarreal drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th to defeat the University of Dallas 7-6 in non-conference action at Don Shepard Park Friday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets tied the game at 6-6 with a two-run homer by
Rylee McGee in the bottom of the ninth to setup the extra inning thriller.
Carson Wert was hit by a pitch and then advanced to third on a
Jonathan McKay bunt.
Joey Villarreal then singled up the middle to plate Wert and give the Jackets the 7-6 10th inning victory.
HPU got its first run of the day in the second when Trevor Fletch reached on a fielder's choice to bring home
Nolyn Box.
The Jackets added three runs in the 6th to make it a 5-4 UDallas lead. McGee singled to center field to bring home Box and then
Jonathan McKay had a two RBI single to left field to plate
David Paleo and McGee.
Jonathan McKay was 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBI.
Rylee McGee went 3-for-4 with two RBI and the one homerun.
Joey Villarreal was 2-for-5 with one RBI.
HPU's
Cody Leal (1-0) recorded the win in relief throwing 1.0 innings and giving up just one hit.
Chandler Paul had the no decision in the start for HPU going 6.0 innings allowing five runs on eight hits and striking out three.
Ty Garner,
Dean Evans, and Johnny Carvey each saw one inning in relief. Evans and Cravey struckout two each.
Howard Payne improves to 2-7 overall and UDallas falls to 1-4Â on the year. Both teams will finish out the series on Saturday with a double header starting at 1:00 pm.
