Jackets Drop DH To Blazers

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University baseball team dropped a double header to Belhaven University which included an eleven inning thriller 11-3 and 5-4 (11) Friday afternoon at Don Shepard Park.

Despite outhitting Belhaven 23-19 in the double header,  Howard Payne committed five errors on the day leading to the 11-3 and 5-4 (11) losses for the Yellow Jackets.

Game One
It was a six-run fifth inning for Belhaven that allowed the Blazers to pull away from the Jackets. 

HPU had five players with multiple hits in the game. Jonathan McKay, Will Iannacone, Joey Villarreal, Stephen Prewitt and Carson Wert each had two hits in game one versus Belhaven.

Harlee Biggs (0-1) recorded the loss in relief going just .1 inning in the fifth allowing four runs on three hits. Ricky Mays had the no decision in the start going 3.0 innings allowing two runs on three hits and striking out four. Jasen Hollingsworth, Dean Evans, Johnny Cravey and Cyah Daniel each saw time in relief. Cravey and Daniel had two strikeouts each.

Game Two
After gaining a 2-1 lead after the first inning, the Yellow Jackets would not score again until the bottom of the ninth when Carson Wert reached on a fielder's choice allowing Derek Gifford to score. Then later in the inning McKay reached on a fielding error by the second baseman allowing Wert score and force extra innings.

The Jackets allowed one run in the tenth but would be unable to score dropping the game 5-4 after 11 innings.

Bryant Chambers had the no decision in the start going 9.0 innings striking out four and walking four. Xavier Haines (1-2) threw 2.0 innings in relief allowing one run on three hits and striking out two in the loss.

Howard Payne is now 4-8 overall and 1-7 in conference play, Belhaven stands at 12-5 overall and 7-1. Both teams will finish out their weekend series with a single game on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
