ABILENE, Texas- The Howard Payne University softball team lost both games 9-8 and 5-1 in a doubleheader versus Hardin-Simmons University.
Game One
Hardin Simmons got on the board first, scoring six runs in the bottom of the second inning. Howard Payne answered, scoring seven runs in the top of the third.
The Cowgirls had the 8-7 lead after five innings. The Lady Jackets tied the game, scoring on an
Aurora Luera single that plated
Zaleigh Perez. HSU took their lead back in the bottom of the sixth inning. HPU was unable to score in the seventh inning, dropping the first game of the series 9-8.
Aurora Luera,
Madison Love, and
Zaleigh Perez had two hits each.
Zaleigh Perez and
Tori Muro both had 2 RBI.Â
Tia Campos (6-9) recorded the loss pitching 4.1 innings, allowing eight runs on 12 hits.
Game Two
Howard Payne got off to a slow start, allowing three unanswered runs in the first three innings. The Lady Jackets got on the board in the fourth inning when
Alyssa Corpus grounded out to plate
Madison Love.
HPU did not score again, dropping the second game of the afternoon 5-1 despite outhitting HSU 11-7.
Zaleigh Perez went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Lady Jackets.
Alexis Sullivan and
Madison Love both went 2-for-4.
Bree Cason (4-4) recorded the loss, pitching six innings, allowing five runs on seven hits.Â
Howard Payne drops to 12-15 on the season and 7-13 in conference play. HSU improves to 12-16 overall and 8-8 in conference play. The two teams will finish out the weekend series tomorrow at 12pm.
