BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University baseball team fell 12-3 in its series finale against Hardin-Simmons University Sunday afternoon at Don Shepard Park.
HPU's
Chandler Paul struck out six in the start for the Yellow Jackets but picked up the loss allowing seven runs (three unearned) on six hits in 3.1 inning of work.
The Jackets tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first when
Carson Wert reached on an error by the pitcher allowing
Jonathan McKay to score.
With Hardin-Simmons leading 8-1, the Jackets added another run in the bottom of the eighth when
Noah Coronado scored on a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Jackets added their last run of the game this time on a
Taylor Griner ground out to plate
Derek Gifford.
Nolyn Box and
Derek Gifford recorded the only hits in the game for the Yellow Jackets.
Along with
Chandler Paul's loss in the start for HPU,
Ricky Mays,
JT Howard,
Jasen Hollingsworth,
Cody Leal,
Harlee Biggs, and
Ty Garner all saw time in relief on the mound for HPU.
The Yellow Jackets will play next on Tuesday at home versus Schreiner University. It will be a non-conference doubleheader starting at 1:00 pm.
