ABILENE, Texas - Howard Payne University catcher
Tanner Benson went 3-for-5 at the plate versus McMurry University in an American Southwest Conference double header Friday afternoon at Walt Driggers Field. The Yellow Jackets lost game one 8-0 and game two 10-4.
Game One
The Yellow Jackets were held to just two hits in the seven inning game of the double header.
Derek Gifford and
Nolyn Box each recorded hits for Howard Payne.
Chandler Paul got the loss in the start for HPU going 4.0 innings allowing seven runs on six hits and striking out three.
Preston Taylor and
Gary Blair each saw an inning of relief.
Game Two
McMurry built a 7-0 lead after six innings when in the seventh the Jackets scored on a
Tanner Benson single up the middle to bring home
Carson Wert.
Then in the top of the ninth, Benson struck again this time a three-run homer to left field scoring
Gage Keate and Wert.
Benson was 3-for-5 at the plate in game two recording four RBI. Wert also finished with three hits going 3-for-4 in the game.
Kyle Purdes got the loss in the start for HPU allowing six runs on nine hits and striking out six in five innings of work. Landon Blass,
D'Andrey Silva, and
Johnny Cravey saw an inning each in relief.
The Yellow Jackets will play next on April 9-10 at home versus the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
