Strong Start Lifts Jackets To 56-42 Victory

ALPINE, Texas – The Howard Payne University football team racked up more than 650 total yards of offense for the second time this season in a 56-42 conference victory at Sul Ross State University Saturday afternoon.

The Yellow Jackets rushed for 266 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 410 yards and six touchdowns (676 Total yards). The second highest total yardage of the season for HPU.

HPU's Otis Lanier had five catches for 159 yards and three touchdowns. The Jackets top rushers were Javian Myles with 14 carries for 97 yards and Billy Reagins with 17 carries for 89 yards and two TDs.

HPU QB Landon McKinney was 20 for 36 passing for 407 yards and six touchdowns. His long TD pass of 64 yards was thrown to Lanier on the second play of the game.

Howard Payne opened up the game with a 21-0 lead after one quarter and extended it to 28-0 minutes into the second quarter on a Billy Reagins one-yard run.

Sul Ross chipped away at the HPU lead and pulled to within one touchdown (49-42) with 11:31 remaining. The Jackets running game flexed its muscles and put the game away scoring on a 42-yard TD reception from Otis Lanier with 37 seconds remaining to secure the 56-42 final.

Jaden Elie and James Jakubowski each recorded a sack for the Jackets and Jarett Brown picked off a pass. Jarett Brown, Kyle Bell, and Jessie Paris each ended with seven tackles.

Howard Payne is now 4-1 overall and 3-0 in American Southwest Conference action. Sul Ross stands at 2-3 overall and 2-1 in league play. The Yellow Jackets will be back at home next Saturday versus McMurry University. It will be a 1:00 pm kickoff.
