BELTON, Texas -- The Howard Payne University volleyball team could not out-play a potent Tigers offense Friday, November 10, losing to East Texas Baptist 3-0 in the ASC Semifinals (10-25, 10-25, 17-25).
The loss moved Howard Payne to 12-14 on the season.
Brylee Awbrey finished with eight kills on the day to lead the Lady Jackets offense. Defensively, HPU had two players reach double figures in digs as Makenzie Weddel had 13 and Riley Brittain had 12.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Lady Jackets found themselves in an early hole, dropping a tough first set 25-10. Howard Payne trailed by as many as 16 points as East Texas Baptist grabbed the advantage for good at 2-1 in a set that was notted up just once before the Tigers took control.
SET 2 | Howard Payne then dropped set two 25-10 to fall behind in the match two sets to none. Howard Payne trailed by as many as 15 points as East Texas Baptist grabbed the advantage for good at 4-3 in a set that was knotted up two times before the Tigers took over the lead.
SET 3 | Howard Payne could not win set three and was swept by East Texas Baptist. The Lady Jackets fell behind on the first point and never took the lead before falling in the set 25-17.
This concludes the historic 2023 season for the Lady Jackets, as they finish 12-14, 4-10 ASC. In Coach Josh Gerig's second season, the Lady Jackets earned their most wins in a season since 2013 when HPU finished 17-17. Howard Payne qualified for the ASC Tournament for the first time since 2016. The Lady Jackets defeated UT Dallas 3-1 in the ASC Quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals for the first time in program history.
