HOUSTON, Texas – The Howard Payne women's basketball team partook in day two of the St. Thomas tournament as they dropped their second game versus Schreiner University 77-62 Sunday, November 26
th in Houston, Texas.
The Lady Jackets had a slow start as they trailed 18-12 at the end of the first quarter. HPU would cut the deficit to four heading into the half, but could not mount the comeback, dropping their second game of the year.
The Lady Jackets were able to force 24 turnovers versus the Mountaineers, converting that into 28 points. Schreiner gained the edge inside the paint, as they outscored HPU 40-18. The Mountaineers also were dominant on the boards outrebounding Howard Payne 42-30 with eight offensive rebounds.
The Lady Jackets shot 31.7% on 63 attempts, knocking down ten three-pointers as well at a 30.3% clip. Schreiner finished 43.6% from the field with only four treys. The Mountaineers were able to make it to the charity strike 34 times, making 25 of those for a 73.5% rate.
Leading the way for Howard Payne was
Taysie Trejo with 22 points. Following behind was
Jazlyn Braithwaite with 11 of her own. Both Trejo and Braithwaite added three steals a piece to go along with
Asia Mitchell's three.
For the Mountaineers, Demauria Miles led the way with 17 points followed by Tianna Murray with 15.
Howard Payne will close out their three game roadtrip as they take on Houston Christian University in an exhibition match with tip-off set for 6:00 PM on Monday, November 27th. With a 4-2 record now, HPU will host the first conference game of the year Thursday, November 30
th as they take on UT Dallas.
