BROWNWOOD, TEXAS – Saturday afternoon, the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets fell 5-3 and 4-2 in games two and three of the McMurry University series.
Game 1
HPU was the first on the board with one run in the bottom of the second inning on a sacrifice fly ball to left field by
Joey Villarreal, bringing in Will Burford from third base.
In the bottom of the fourth with two on base, a single hit by Sam Lampson sent
Kayden Kelley home to score their second run. Making the score 2-0 at the bottom of the fourth.
The War Hawks responded with two runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game 2-2.
Due to an error by McMurry's shortstop,
Kayden Kelley was able to reach first base bringing in
Seth Bowman to take the lead 3-2.
McMurry was able to score two more runs in the top of the sixth.
HPU was unable to come back making the final score 5-3 in game one of the double header.
Brayden Ferrie was the game one starting pitcher for the Jackets, throwing five strikeouts and only allowed two runs while pitching 5.0 innings.
Bryson Adare took the loss for HPU today allowing three runs with two strikeouts in 2.0 innings.
Game 2
The War Hawks scored one run in the second inning, one in the third, and two in the fourth, putting them ahead 4-0.
HPU was able to get on the board in the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff walk from
Rylee McGee followed by a two RBI home run from
Seth Bowman. This put the Yellow Jackets back in the game making the score 4-2.
The Jackets were unable to take the lead, giving McMurry the win over game two, 4-2.
Canon De Serf was first on the mound for the Jackets, pitching 3.2 innings, with 3 strikeouts and allowing four runs.
Gary Blair threw for the rest of the game pitching 5.1 innings. He had two strikeouts and allowed no runs.
Carson Wert and
Joey Villarreal led the team in hits going 2-for-4.
The Yellow Jackets are now 5-4 on the season and 1-2 in conference. They will take on University of Mary Hardin-Baylor this upcoming Friday, March 3
rd at 7:00 pm in Belton, Texas.
