BROWNWOOD, Texas – Howard Payne University's
Armonie Ramey led the Yellow Jackets in an 80-70 loss to Concordia University Texas Monday evening at the Brownwood Coliseum.
HPU's
Armonie Ramey recorded his fifth double-double of the season with a game-high 22 points and 11 boards. Ramey also had three assists and three steals.
Miles Koehler followed with 14 points.
Deshon Shorter added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Jarod Johnson dished out a game-high seven assists.
The Yellow Jackets trailed 38-33 at the half. But after finding themselves down by as much as 14 points midway through the second half, HPU rallied to within three points, 71-68 with under three minutes to play. The run was sparked by great play from freshman Ramey, Shorter, and Johnson.
Free throws down the stretch by Concordia would secure the game for the Tornados 80-70. Concordia shot 17 more free throws in the game than Howard Payne. CTX was 25 of 36 and HPU finished the game 13 of 19 at the line.
CTX was led by Donovan Stafford with 15 points and Deon Williams with 12 points and 15 rebounds.
Howard Payne stands at 3-20 overall and 1-14 in American Southwest Conference action. Concordia is now 12-8 on the year and 9-5 in league play. The Jackets will play next on Thursday at LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas. It will be a 7:30 pm start time.
