BROWNWOOD, TEXAS – The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets split today's double header versus East Texas Baptist University, winning the first game 2-1, and ETBU winning the second game 6-4 in extra innings.
Game 1
It was a scoreless game until the top of the seventh inning, ETBU scoring one run.
Howard Payne responded with a single to right field by
Landon Prestage, bringing in
Kaleb Kuligowski for the run, making the game tied 1-1.
Noah Coronado ended the game with a walk off to right field, bringing in
Joey Villarreal from second for the win.
HPU's
Noah Coronado led the team with two hits and one RBI.
Today's starting pitcher was
Brayden Ferrie, pitching for 5.1 innings. He allowed no runs and had four strikeouts.
Bryson Adare got today's win, pitching 1.2 innings and had three strikeouts.
Game 2
The Yellow Jackets scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth, on a sacrifice fly by
Noah Coronado, bringing home
Seth Bowman and making the score 1-0.
In the next four innings, ETBU was able to score a total of four runs to make the game 4-1.
HPU battled back in the bottom of the eighth, tying the game by adding three more runs. Sam Lampson scored a run off of a single to right field by
Seth Bowman. JP Zuniga Rodriguez then doubled to right center, bringing home Bowman and pinch runner
Kyle Hemenway.
Going to the tenth inning, the Tigers were able to score two more runs putting them ahead 6-4. The Jackets were not able to get any more runs, making that the final score.
The Yellow Jackets are now 9-10 on the season and 4-5 in conference. They will take on LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas next Friday, March 24
th at 7:00 pm.
