DALLAS, Texas – The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets split today's double header versus Dallas Christian College. HPU won the first game 4-3, and Dallas Christian won the second game 6-3.
Game 1
Dallas Christian was the first on the board with two runs in the first inning and one in the third.
In the top of the fourth, HPU's
Tanner Benson singled to left field, bringing home
Joey Villarreal and
Derek Gifford, making the score 3-2 Dallas Christian.
Howard Payne's
John Garza scored off of an error by Dallas Christian. Then off of a sacrifice bunt,
Derek Gifford scored the last run of the game, making the final score 4-3 HPU.
Leading the Jackets,
Matthew Garcia had two hits and one RBI. HPU out hit Dallas Christian 8-6.
Taking today's win, Dean Evan pitched 2.0 innings, had two strikeouts, and allowed no runs.
Anthony Cook will take the save, pitching 1.0 inning.
Game 2
In the bottom of the first and second inning, Dallas Christian scored a total of five runs.
The Jackets scored their first run in the top of the sixth off of a hit by
Noah Coronado, allowing
Devin Smith to score. This put the score at 5-1 Dallas Christian.
Dallas Christian was able to score one more run in the bottom of the sixth.
In the top of the seventh, Howard Payne's Will Burford singled up the middle, bringing home
Derek Gifford and Sam Lampson. Only able to score two runs in the seventh, this made the final score 6-3 Dallas Christian.
Pitching 2.0 innings, HPU's
Jack Shackelford had three strikeouts and allowed no runs.
The Yellow Jackets are currently 14-17 overall and 7-11 in conference. They play again this Friday, April 14
th, versus University of the Ozarks at home in Don Shepard Park at 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm.
