ALPINE, TEXAS – The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets split today's doubleheader versus Sul Ross State University, HPU winning the first game 4-3, and Sul Ross winning the second game 5-11.
Game 1
Sul Ross scored the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the first inning. HPU responded with a home run to left field by
Landon Prestage, making the score 2-1 Sul Ross.
In the top of the fourth, Will Burford singled to left field, bringing in
JP Zuniga-Rodriguez and
Landon Prestage for the run.
The Lobos were able to score one more run in the bottom of the seventh, tying the game 3-3.
In the top of the ninth inning,
Carson Wert singled to right center, allowing
Seth Bowman to score. This put the Jackets ahead and gave them the win 4-3.
HPU's
Seth Bowman led the team with two hits. Pitching 1.2 innings,
Grant Beaver had two strikeouts and will take today's win for the Yellow Jackets.
Game 2
The Lobos started off the game with two runs in the bottom of the first.
The Yellow Jackets quickly responded with four runs in the top of the second.
Joey Villarreal doubled to left center, bringing home
JP Zuniga-Rodriguez and
Landon Prestage. Will Burford then scored on a passed ball. The last run was scored by
Joey Villarreal on an error by Sul Ross.
By the bottom of the sixth inning, Sul Ross scored nine total runs, bringing the score to 11-4 Sul Ross.
HPU was able to score one more run in the top of the seventh off of a home run by
Tanner Benson, making the final score 11-5 Sul Ross.
Starting pitcher for the Jackets,
Brendan Read, pitched 3.1 innings and had three strikeouts.
Joey Villarreal led the team with two hits and two RBI.
The Yellow Jackets are now 17-19 on the season and 10-13 in conference. They will compete again tomorrow, April 21
st, at 12:00 pm in Alpine, Texas to finish out the Sul Ross State series.
