BROWNWOOD, Texas -- Makenzie Weddel and Brylee Awbrey both notched double-doubles, but the Howard Payne volleyball team was defeated by the Schreiner Mountaineers 3-1 (23-25, 25-13, 26-28, 22-25) Wednesday at home at the Brownwood Coliseum. Senior Riley Brittain recorded her 1000th career assist in set three of tonight's match.
The non-conference loss dropped Howard Payne to 5-1 on the season.
The Lady Jackets were led by double-doubles from both Awbrey, who had 11 kills and 16 digs, and Weddel, who had 12 kills and 13 digs. Rylee McAlexander also added 15 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Jaiden Albright chipped in with 13 digs to go with seven blocks from Rylee Spencer.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Lady Jackets found themselves in an early deficit, dropping a nail-biter first set 25-23. Howard Payne trailed by as many as six points as Schreiner grabbed the advantage for good at 5-4 in a set that was tied up eight times before the Mountaineers took over the lead.
SET 2 | Howard Payne rallied after dropping the first set to take the second set 25-13, tying the match at 1-1. The Lady Jackets grabbed the set with the help of a strong performance on the attacking side. Howard Payne registered a .423 attack percentage with 12 kills in the set win. The Lady Jackets ended on a strong note, stretching their lead to its largest point in the set to finish out the stanza. The Howard Payne offense also got a boost from three aces in the set. Howard Payne's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four Schreiner attacks.
SET 3 | Howard Payne fell in the third set, putting the Lady Jackets in a 2-1 hole. HPU fell in a close set, losing 28-26 in a set that was tied six times and had four lead changes.
SET 4 | Howard Payne then lost the fourth set 25-22 to finish off the match. The Lady Jackets battled back from a nine-point deficit at 12-3, but it wasn't enough as Schreiner hung on to win the set.
The Lady Jackets will travel to Abilene, Texas for a two-day road trip taking on Hardin-Simmons at 6:00 PM on Friday, September 15th and McMurry University at 12:00 PM on Saturday, September 16th.
