BROWNWOOD, Texas -- Howard Payne University's Taysie Trejo, Briley Waters and Jazlyn Braithwaite combined to score 39 of Howard Payne's 47 total points, but the Lady Jackets fell to the McMurry University War Hawks 71-47 at home Tuesday.
The Lady Jackets (1-4) had three players score in double figures, led by Trejo, who had 14 points and two steals. Waters added 13 points, six rebounds and two steals and Braithwaite helped out with 12 points and two steals.
The Howard Payne defense was a problem in Tuesday's game, forcing 20 McMurry turnovers while committing 16. Those takeaways turned into only nine points on the other end of the floor. Caitlyn Panuco led the way individually for the Lady Jackets with two steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 9-7, Howard Payne went on a 5-0 run with 1:45 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Braithwaite, to take a 12-9 lead. The Lady Jackets then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 12-11 advantage.
McMurry rallied to take a 29-14 lead before Howard Payne went on a 7-0 run starting at the 2:29 mark in the second period to narrow its deficit to 29-21. McMurry responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Lady Jackets trailing 32-21 heading into halftime.
Howard Payne came out of halftime on fire, going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Panuco, to trim its deficit to 32-26 with 8:27 to go in the third. McMurry countered and stretched its lead to 52-32 heading into the fourth. Howard Payne played well near the basket, scoring six of its 11 points in the paint.
Howard Payne came out of the third quarter break clicking on all cylinders, going on an 8-0 run to shrink the deficit to 52-40 with 8:47 to go in the contest. McMurry responded and outscored the Lady Jackets the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 71-47. Howard Payne fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 15 points.
