IRVING, Texas --The Howard Payne University women's basketball team got a 24-point showing from the bench on the way to a 78-64 victory against the University of Dallas Crusaders on the road Wednesday.
The Lady Jackets (2-5) had four players score in double figures, led by Taysie Trejo, who had 16 points and four steals. Caitlyn Panuco added 15 points and two steals and Tatum Walker helped out with a double-double off the bench with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Led by Walker's five offensive rebounds, Howard Payne did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 13 boards that resulted in 18 second chance points.
Howard Payne forced 21 UDallas turnovers while committing 15 themselves in Wednesday's game. The Lady Jackets turned those takeaways into 20 points on the offensive end of the floor. Trejo's four steals led the way for Howard Payne.
How It Happened
After jumping out to an 18-16 advantage, Howard Payne went on a 5-0 run with 1:53 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Hannah Harmon, to increase its lead to 23-16. The Lady Jackets then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 25-20 advantage. Howard Payne did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 16 of its 25 points close to the basket.
Howard Payne kept its first quarter lead intact before going on an 11-0 run starting at the 4:34 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Trejo, to increase its lead to 40-27. The Crusaders cut into that lead, but the Lady Jackets still enjoyed a 42-34 advantage heading into halftime. Howard Payne dominated in the paint, scoring 14 of its 17 points close to the basket.
Howard Payne continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Trejo, to expand its lead further to 47-40 with 6:46 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Crusaders had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Lady Jackets still entered the fourth quarter with a 61-55 edge. Howard Payne's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled five of the team's 19 third-quarter points.
Howard Payne kept widening that lead, expanding it to 65-58 before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Briley Waters' layup, to grow the lead to 70-58 with 7:03 to go in the contest. The Lady Jackets kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 78-64 win. Howard Payne took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 17 points in the paint.
