KERRVILLE, Texas -- Howard Payne University's Armonie Ramey and Hudson Johnson each recorded double-doubles, but the Howard Payne men's basketball team fell to the Schreiner Mountaineers 115-86 on the road Friday.
The Yellow Jackets (0-1) had four players score in double figures, led by Ramey, who notched a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Johnson added a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds and Trey Jackson chipped in as well with 13 points.
Led by Ramey's eight offensive rebounds, Howard Payne did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 21 boards that resulted in 33 second chance points.
The Howard Payne defense was a problem in Friday's game, forcing 17 Schreiner turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 13 points on the other end of the floor. Mario Perry led the way individually for the Yellow Jackets with three steals.
How It Happened
Howard Payne struggled out of the gate, falling behind 55-43 heading into halftime.
Schreiner kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 75-57 advantage before Howard Payne went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Ramey's layup, to shrink the deficit to 75-62 with 12:03 to go in the contest. Schreiner responded and outscored the Yellow Jackets the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 115-86. Howard Payne took care of business in the paint, recording 26 of its 43 points in the lane.
