BROWNWOOD, Texas -- Jacob Korrodi snagged two interceptions, but Howard Payne University football team fell to East Texas Baptist University 38-17 at home Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers improved to 5-3 on the year and 2-3 in American Southwest Conference play, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 1-7 overall and 0-5 in conference matchups.
Zy Gravitt led Howard Payne's passing attack with 217 yards through the air, tossing two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Kiante Stoker led all Yellow Jackets rushers with 33 yards in the contest. Blessing Ngene also added 18 yards on the ground, averaging 6 yards per carry.
Gus Charles pulled in 10 catches for 131 yards and two scores. Kristopher Creel made his presence felt in the passing game, recording two receptions for 51 yards.
In addition to Korrodi's two interceptions, the defender had seven tackles to lead the Yellow Jackets defensively. Cameron Hall tacked on four tackles, 1.5 TFL, and one sack.
Howard Payne's defense held up fairly well against the run, limiting East Texas Baptist to 134 yards on the ground. The Yellow Jackets defense disrupted the East Texas Baptist passing attack on the way to pulling down two interceptions and breaking up two Tigers passes.
How It Happened
East Texas Baptist opened up a 14-0 lead, but Howard Payne scored with 13:32 left in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 14-3.East Texas Baptist extended its lead to 24-3, but the Yellow Jackets responded with a touchdown to cut into the lead to 24-10.
After East Texas Baptist scored to increase its lead to 31-10, Howard Payne responded with a touchdown with 2:52 remaining in the fourth quarter lead to cut the deficit to 31-17. Howard Payne went scoreless the rest of the game while East Texas Baptist tacked on seven points to finish off the scoring.
