SEGUIN, Texas --The Howard Payne University women's basketball team's offense moved the ball around well on the road Saturday, collecting 14 assists on 22 made shots, but the Lady Jackets fell to the Texas Lutheran University Bulldogs 78-62.
The Lady Jackets (0-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Taysie Trejo, who had 18 points and two steals. Jazlyn Braithwaite added 14 points and five assists and Madison Clay chipped in as well with 10 points.
The Howard Payne offense was very productive from beyond the arc, knocking down nine threes on 24 attempts. Trejo was the most prolific shooter for the Lady Jackets, draining three treys in the contest.
The Howard Payne defense was a problem in Saturday's game, forcing 15 Texas Lutheran turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 13 points on the offensive end of the floor. Trejo's two steals led the way individually for the Lady Jackets.
How It Happened
Howard Payne struggled out of the gate, falling behind 18-13 at the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Jackets continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 44-21 halftime deficit.
Texas Lutheran continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 55-29 advantage before Howard Payne went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Braithwaite, to trim its deficit to 55-34 with 4:30 to go in the third. Texas Lutheran countered and stretched its lead to 63-39 heading into the fourth. Howard Payne turned three offensive rebounds into six second chance points on the way to scoring 18 total points in the quarter.
Howard Payne narrowed its deficit to 65-42 before going on a 10-0 run to shrink the deficit to 65-52 with 6:13 to go in the contest. Texas Lutheran responded and outscored the Lady Jackets the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 78-62. Howard Payne fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 23 points.
