GEORGETOWN, Texas --Howard Payne University's Madison Clay and Caitlyn Panuco combined to score 23 total points, but the Lady Jackets fell to the Southwestern (TX) Pirates 77-35 on the road Monday.
Panuco led the Lady Jackets (3-8) with seven points, eight rebounds and two steals. Clay added 16 points and Kiana Henning chipped in as well with six points and three steals.
The Howard Payne defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Monday's game, forcing 16 Southwestern (TX) turnovers. Those takeaways turned into five points on the offensive end of the floor. Henning's three steals led the way individually for the Lady Jackets.
How It Happened
Howard Payne struggled out of the gate, falling behind 17-5 at the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Jackets continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 36-11 halftime deficit.
Southwestern (TX) continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 48-15 advantage before Howard Payne went on an 8-0 run to trim its deficit to 48-23 with 4:32 to go in the third. Southwestern (TX) countered and stretched its lead to 58-24 heading into the fourth. Howard Payne scored three fast break points in the quarter.
Southwestern (TX) kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 68-28 advantage before Howard Payne went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Henning's layup, to shrink the deficit to 68-35 with 3:58 to go in the contest. Southwestern (TX) responded and outscored the Lady Jackets the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 77-35. Howard Payne took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its 11 points in the paint.
