ABILENE, Texas -- Howard Payne University's Hudson Johnson scored 26 points and Ben Phillip added 23, but the Howard Payne men's basketball team fell to the McMurry University War Hawks 107-100 on the road Tuesday.
The Yellow Jackets (6-6) had four players score in double figures, led by Johnson, who had 26 points. Phillip tacked on 23 points and two blocks and Trey Jackson helped out with 16 points.
The Howard Payne offense was strong from beyond the arc, knocking down nine threes on 26 attempts. Phillip hit seven treys for the Yellow Jackets in the contest.
How It Happened
After falling behind 51-43, Howard Payne went on a 9-0 run with 2:24 left in the first half to take a 52-51 lead, a score that would hold until halftime. Howard Payne did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 26 of its 52 points close to the basket.
McMurry proceeded to take an 89-85 lead before Howard Payne went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Jackson's layup, to seize a 92-89 lead with 7:34 to go in the contest. McMurry re-asserted control, outscoring the Yellow Jackets 18-8 the rest of the way to hand Howard Payne the 107-100 loss.
