STEPHENVILLE, Texas --The Howard Payne University men's basketball team got a 31-point showing from the bench, but fell 100-83 to the D-I Tarleton State University Texans on the road Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets (6-6) had three players score in double figures, led by Armonie Ramey, who had 22 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Ben Phillip tacked on 13 points and three steals and Alan Rhone chipped in as well with 10 points from the bench.
Ramey pulled down six offensive rebounds to pace the Howard Payne offense which grabbed 13 boards and turned them into 16 second chance points.
Howard Payne did a great job disrupting Tarleton State shots in the contest, coming away with seven blocks. Mason McGowen led the way individually for the Yellow Jackets with two rejections.
How It Happened
Howard Payne struggled out of the gate, falling behind 51-36 heading into halftime.
After intermission, Howard Payne kept the Texans from increasing their lead before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Ramey's three, to shrink the deficit to 70-60 with 8:21 to go in the contest. Tarleton State responded and outscored the Yellow Jackets the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 100-83. Howard Payne capitalized on 20 Tarleton State turnovers in the period, collecting 23 points off those turnovers.
