BROWNWOOD, TX - The Howard Payne University baseball team dropped both games to Texas-Dallas on Saturday at Don Shepard Park.
GAME 1 | Texas-Dallas 23, Howard Payne 5
Tanner Benson collected four hits, but the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets fell to the Texas-Dallas Comets 23-5 on Saturday.
Brendan Read (2-2) started and took the loss on the mound for Howard Payne (9-17, 5-11). Cade Henry was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going 1.2 shutout innings without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out one.
In addition to his four hits, Benson had a double and an RBI to lead the Yellow Jackets. Seth Bowman furnished a standout effort as well, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. JP Zuniga-Rodriguez also helped out for Howard Payne, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a triple and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Yellow Jackets were trailing 5-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. Landon Prestage's run-scoring single highlighted a two-run inning for Howard Payne.
The Comets expanded their lead to 23-2 before the Yellow Jackets offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the sixth. Howard Payne pushed across a run on Bowman's RBI double, which tightened the Comets lead to 23-3.
Howard Payne held the Comets off the scoreboard before narrowing the gap to 23-5 in the seventh. The Yellow Jackets notched two runs in the frame, punctuated with an RBI triple from . The Yellow Jackets were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.

Brayden Ferrie (1-6) started and took the loss on the mound for Howard Payne (9-18, 5-12).
Burford went 3-for-4 with a double and a home run in addition to his five RBIs for the Yellow Jackets. Seth Bowman put together a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI. J. Zuniga-Rodriguez also helped out for Howard Payne, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding three walks and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 8-0, the Yellow Jackets first put runs on the board in the second inning. Howard Payne scored three times, all of them coming across on a three-run homer off the bat of Burford.
The Yellow Jackets deficit expanded to 18-3 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the fifth inning. Howard Payne brought home a pair, with one run driven in by Korey Kelley's single, which brought the score to 18-5 in favor of the Comets.
Texas-Dallas built their lead to 21-5 before the Howard Payne offense got back in action, reducing that lead to 21-8 in the sixth.
