BROWNWOOD, Texas --Kate Buchanan registered a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds, but the Howard Payne women's basketball team fell to the Hardin-Simmons Cowgirls 87-57 at home Thursday.
The Lady Jackets (4-15, 0-3) had two players score in double figures, led by Azaylee Santos, who had 13 points. Buchaman added a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds and Kiana Henning added eight points.
Buchanan pulled down eight offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Howard Payne, grabbing 11 boards and turning them into eight second chance points.
How It Happened
Howard Payne entered the second quarter tied at 11-11 after a tightly contested first period. Howard Payne did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring eight of its 11 points close to the basket.
The Cowgirls then took control in the second quarter and the Lady Jackets entered halftime behind 40-26.
Hardin-Simmons continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 62-37 advantage before Howard Payne went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Santos, to trim its deficit to 62-42 with 50 seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Howard Payne turned seven offensive rebounds into six second chance points on the way to scoring 16 total points in the quarter.
Hardin-Simmons kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing an 87-49 advantage before Howard Payne went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Kasey Bonner's three, to shrink the deficit to 87-57 with 1:13 to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Howard Payne fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 15 points.
