MARSHALL, Texas --Madison Clay and Kiana Henning combined to score 33 total points, but the Yellow Jackets fell to the Millsaps Majors 63-51 at Ornelas Gymnasium Friday.
Clay led the Yellow Jackets (4-11) with 25 points and seven rebounds. Henning added eight points and five assists and Hannah Harmon helped out with six points off the bench.
Howard Payne took advantage of great ball movement in Friday's game, piling up 15 assists on 18 made field goals. Henning's five assists were the most for the Yellow Jackets and Harmon also added three assists of her own.
The Howard Payne defense held Millsaps shooters to only 32.8 percent from the field, including 13.3 percent from three-point range.
How It Happened
Howard Payne struggled out of the gate, falling behind 17-8 at the end of the first quarter.
The Yellow Jackets continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 34-18 halftime deficit.
Howard Payne came out of haltime rallying and had constructed a 41-25 lead before going on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a three from Clay, to expand its lead further to 50-25 with 3:23 to go in the third. Millsaps responded to seize a 51-33 lead entering the fourth quarter. Howard Payne knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 15 total points.
Howard Payne managed to gain control and had a 60-49 lead before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Kaley Nicholson's layup, to grow the lead to 65-49 with 36 seconds to go in the contest. Millsaps then asserted control, outscoring the Yellow Jackets 14--14 the rest of the way to hand Howard Payne the 63-51 loss. Howard Payne fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 18 points.
