Box Score GAME 1
BROWNWOOD, Texas --
The Howard Payne Lady Jackets had a very eventful day Saturday as they faced off against visiting Dallas Christian College.
In the first game, it was instantly an offensive bout between the two teams. In the top of the first, the Lady Crusaders found much success against
Ava Aviles (2-5) scoring four runs. The lead got as big as 7-1 in the 2nd after J. Amparo singled driving in two runs.
The Lady Jackets were being stubborn however, not allowing the Lady Crusaders to have their way, scoring four runs against K. Cauthron (2-1) with the help of
Madison Garza's single that drove in two runs. The score was set at 8-7 in the 4th inning, but that was as close as the Lady Jackets were gonna get. The Crusaders eventually went on a rally and finished the game winning 12-9.
Makayla Wesley had a fantastic offensive game, having three hits and one RBI. Garza also had three hits in the game and two RBIs.
GAME 2
BROWNWOOD, Texas --
After their first game defeat, the Lady Jackets knew that in order to find success in the next game, they'd have to have better pitching, and that's exactly what they got from
Destiny Sanchez (2-6), who pitched the complete game allowing just seven hits, three runs, and 3 ER. Sanchez was throwing heat throughout the contest, which Dallas Christian was not prepared for. Many times during the game, Sanchez would throw pitches that forced the opposing teams batters to pop up in the infield.
Opposed to the first game, the second was a true pitching battle, with runs being hard to come by for both squads.
In the bottom of the 5th, the score was tied up at 1 until
Makayla Wesley singled up the middle that drove in
Madison Garza to give the Lady Jackets their first lead for the afternoon. That score held until the top of the 7th, where the Lady Crusaders scored two runs from T. Meyer and K. Lewis, giving them the late game lead.
With the game all but over, the Lady Jackets were not going to back down. Already suffering four one-run defeats already on the year, Head Coach
Graciella Becerra made important mental notes of the defeats and used her knowledge to put the ladies into a position to win, and that's exactly what happened.
Starting out the bottom of the 7th, speedy
Elise Munoz found her typical lead off walk, but was out at 2nd after a fielders choice getting Garza in at first. A perfectly placed double down the left line by
Annie-Klein Allgood advanced Garza to third. Power hitter
Makayla Wesley then stepped into the batter's box knowing what her job was, getting Munoz home, and she did just that with a groundout to 2nd base.
With two outs and the winning run at 3rd,
Jaliyah Rodriguez decided to play hero ball, smacking K. Brent's fastball down the right line where there was no chance for the right fielder. Allgood walked in safely and the Lady Jackets got the victory!
The resilient Lady Jackets will face LeTourneau University at home, Friday April 4th, for their first conference game of the year.
