Howard Payne drops doubleheader vs ETBU

GAME 1 | East Texas Baptist 8, Howard Payne 4
BROWNWOOD, Texas --The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets fell 8-4 in an eight-inning matchup to the East Texas Baptist Tigers Friday.

D. Bower (1-4) got the ball to start for Howard Payne (7-20, 0-6) and took the loss. J. Shackelfo was a bright spot for the Yellow Jackets, coming out of the bullpen and throwing five innings, giving up one run on three hits, with no walks and three strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 7-0, the Yellow Jackets first put runs on the board in the second inning. W. Burford came across to score the lone run of the inning for Howard Payne and get them on the board.

The Yellow Jackets deficit grew to 8-1 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the fourth inning. Howard Payne picked up a run on L. Prestage's two-out solo home run off of M. Irwin, which tightened the Tigers lead to 8-2.

Howard Payne kept the Tigers off the scoreboard before narrowing the gap to 8-4 in the sixth. The Yellow Jackets were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.

C. Serf (2-3) got the ball to start for Howard Payne (7-21, 0-7) and took the loss. T. George was a bright spot for the Yellow Jackets, coming out of the bullpen and throwing one scoreless inning, allowing no hits, with no walks and two strikeouts.

In addition to his four hits, Pfaff had a double and a triple to lead the Yellow Jackets. E. McNair compiled a noteworthy performance as well, going 1-for-2 with two walks. W. Burford also chipped in for Howard Payne, putting together two hits in five trips to the plate.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 9-0, the Yellow Jackets first put runs on the board in the sixth inning. Howard Payne managed to push across two runs in the inning.

The Tigers expanded their lead to 10-2 before the Yellow Jackets offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the eighth. Pfaff came across to score the lone run of the inning for Howard Payne, which brought the score to 10-3 in favor of the Tigers. The Yellow Jackets were unable to get any closer, as East Texas Baptist added seven runs to their tally on the way to a 17-3 final.
