ABILENE, Texas -- The Howard Payne Men's and Women's tennis teams faced off against McMurry University on Monday.
On the Men's side, they had a rough showing, losing the match 1-6. However, during rebuilding years under first year head coach
Mark Hathorn, this is to be expected. There will always be good things that can come out of defeats, and
Gabriel Keeney-McCollough did just that. He was the lone victor for the Yellow Jackets, winning his singles matchup against McMurry's Evan Pezirtzoglou in both sets. Keeney-McCollough was in the #3 slot for singles, but played up to his standards and more.
Nicolas Gates was in his usual #1 slot for singles, being the defined leader for the team since the season began. Gates won his first set against Mason Bagwell 6-3, but dropped the next two to lose for the Men's ones.
The Women's team saw much success against McMurry, winning the match 6-1.
The heroics of
Hannah Lightner and
Victoria Ramos lifted the Jackets to secure their fourth win of the season. The Ladies #1 doubles team set the bar for the rest of the contest, winning their battle 6-4. This gave the ladies hope as they knew they could claim vicory over the War Hawks.
Onto the singles matches, it was a near sweep for the Lady Jackets as they Lightner, Ramos,
Kendra Werlein, and
Mikayla Hernandez all won.
For the near-75 fans in attendance on Monday, they saw pure domination from this Women's team.
