Box Score BROWNWOOD, Texas – Howard Payne University men's soccer rallied from an early deficit and twice found the back of the net in the second half to earn a 2-2 draw with Centenary College (LA) on Saturday evening at Citizens National Bank Field.
Centenary struck first in the 23rd minute when Carter Webb scored off an assist from Jacob Ramsey to put the visitors ahead 1-0. The Jackets kept the deficit at one going into halftime thanks to key stops from goalkeeper
Adrian Villa, who recorded four saves on the night.
Howard Payne responded quickly after the break. In the 50th minute,
Ethan Mauldin finished a chance set up by
Zachary Hallman and
Xzavier Saldana, leveling the match at 1-1. The Jackets continued to press forward, and in the 84th minute Saldana converted a penalty kick after Centenary was reduced to nine men following a pair of red cards, giving HPU a 2-1 advantage.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Ramsey equalized for Centenary less than a minute later, salvaging the 2-2 result.
HPU outshot Centenary 12-13 overall, with 10 of those on frame. Mauldin and Saldana each tallied their first goals of the season, while Hallman collected his first assist.
The draw moves Howard Payne to 0-5-1 on the year, while Centenary stands at 2-2-2. The Jackets will return to action next week as they continue their non-conference slate at Citizens National Bank Field.
