Cameron Hall: From The Woodlands to the Heartland

Hall named to D3football.com National Team of the Week

BROWNWOOD, Texas - For most college football players, a serious injury can feel like the end of everything they have worked toward. For Cameron Hall, it became the beginning of a new perspective. And in the new landscape the college football world presents to student-athletes, Hall went against the grain by honoring his commitment during a time of immense change for the Howard Payne University football program.

The senior defensive lineman from The Woodlands, Texas, saw his football career suddenly put on hold when he suffered a major shoulder injury that required surgery. As difficult as the experience was, Hall chose to view the setback as an opportunity rather than an obstacle.

"I went back home to The Woodlands. It was a great surgery," Hall said. "It went better than expected and they thought it was a lot worse, so that helped."

While the physical recovery presented its own challenges, Hall found strength in areas of his life that football had often overshadowed. Instead of allowing frustration to take over, he leaned into his faith and focused on personal growth away from the field.

"I think I took it on better than most people would," Hall added. "I was able to get closer with God. I was in my Word. It helped me realize that there was more things than just football. I was more than a football player."

That realization helped Hall navigate one of the most uncertain stretches of his collegiate career. Prior to the hurdles that came with his junior season injury, there were other changes made within the Howard Payne football program. Coaching transitions can create uncertainty for any student-athlete. Yet Hall never seriously considered walking away from the program that had invested in him.

Part of that stability came from the relationships he built with coaches throughout his career.

"Coach [Cade] Gray was my recruiting coach at the time. He was a defensive line coach," Hall shared. "He talked to me before he left and helped me weigh the options on the table. Coach [Coby] Gipson also helped me make my final decision with his vision for not just myself, but the program as a whole."

Those conversations reinforced Hall's belief that his future extended beyond football. Through experiences provided by the coaching staff, he discovered another passion waiting for him after his playing days are over.

"I want to teach PE and go into coaching," Hall said. "They had us at the middle schools, at the elementaries. That helped me grow a love for wanting to teach kids."

As Hall adapted to the change around him, followed by his work through rehab to conclude his junior season, he continued to embrace the role of a leader. Younger players saw firsthand what perseverance looked like. Teammates watched him attack recovery with the same determination he brought to the defensive line.

"I am so thankful that Cam Hall is a Howard Payne Yellow Jacket," second-year head coach Coby Gipson said. "He embodies what we are trying to build as a program -- a person who exemplifies what our university stands for and maximizes his capacity on and off the field. I have had a front row view for two incredible seasons to see Cam impact his teammates, dominate on the field, and serve this community"

Now, as he closes out his collegiate career, Hall's story is about much more than football. It is about resilience through adversity, finding purpose beyond the game and choosing to remain committed when circumstances become difficult.

The injury that once threatened to define his career ultimately helped Hall discover a deeper identity rooted in faith, family and service. Whether he is lining up on the defensive front or one day standing in front of a classroom, the lessons learned through that journey will continue to shape his future.

"When he scored a TD at Homecoming while playing tight end while also being a standout on defense says so much about him." Coach Gipson added. "I am a Cam Hall fan for life, will always be in his corner, and the best is yet to come!"

HALL EARNS NATIONAL RECOGNITION

The senior defensive lineman continues to rewrite history for Howard Payne. On Tuesday morning, Cameron earned his spot on the D3football.com National "Team of the Week" after his standout performance for Howard Payne's 41-21 win over Schreiner University on Saturday, October 17, in Kerrville, Texas. Hall's honor is monumental for the football program, as this makes it the first time since 2006 that the Yellow Jackets have had players named to D3football.com's "Team of the Week" for back-to-back weeks. Junior Elijah Flowers-Goodloe earned the honor after his performance in HPU's loss to the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor.

Hall had his best performance of the season, recording five total tackles, four solo tackles, 2.5 TFL and 1.5 sacks in the victory, all of which were his season high. The Woodlands, Texas native was an integral part of Howard Payne's victory in its first contest against Schreiner University since World War II, and in the Yellow Jackets' first conference win of the season.
