Howard Payne Shows Grit in Road Loss at East Texas Baptist

May Leads HPU with Double-Double in Tough ASC Road Contest

Howard Payne battled through a tough American Southwest Conference road outing at Ornelas Gymnasium, ultimately falling 89‑71, but there were plenty of solid individual efforts to build on. Carter May led the Jackets with an efficient 19 points, going 8‑for‑11 from the field and pulling down a team‑high 10 rebounds while also adding a pair of steals in 32 minutes. Ben Phillip provided a strong scoring punch off the wing, finishing with 15 points on 4‑for‑11 shooting with three triples and a perfect 4‑for‑4 at the line, showing his ability to stretch the defense. Braylon Crosby chipped in 8 points and was active on the glass, and the bench contributed 19 points that kept HPU competitive through stretches of the second half. The Jackets shot a respectable 37.5 percent from the floor and knocked down 30.4 percent of their threes, with their free‑throw accuracy (72.7 percent) improving in the second half. Howard Payne also generated 17 assists and scored 17 fast‑break points, illustrating their willingness to share the ball and push the pace even in a tough road setting.

Head Coach Nadir Dalleh emphasized the grit he saw in his group, saying "we kept competing every possession, and I'm proud of how our guys attacked the glass and made them work for every point; we'll take those lessons back home and keep building."

The Jackets will return home for their next game on February 14th for Senior Day against ETBU.
