The bats made the trip to Abilene and never went quiet.
On the road Tuesday night, Howard Payne stormed into War Hawk territory and left with a loud 19–11 win over McMurry University at Walt Driggers Field in Abilene. From the very first inning, it was clear this one would tilt toward the visitors.
Howard Payne wasted no time setting the tone. The Yellow Jackets erupted for nine runs in the opening frame, sending waves of hitters to the plate and forcing McMurry to play catch up before the crowd had fully settled in. The inning was powered by big swings and relentless pressure, highlighted by Landon Prestage's early blast that helped crack the game wide open.
And the offense never eased off the accelerator.
Howard Payne piled up 19 runs on 21 hits, turning the box score into a scroll of crooked numbers. Huston Cornish delivered a standout performance at the plate, going 3-for-5, crossing home four times and driving in key runs in the middle innings. Joshua Lile matched the rhythm with three hits of his own and three RBIs, consistently cashing in opportunities created ahead of him.
John Garza and Jace MacKenzie each added three-hit performances, keeping the lineup rotating and the pressure constant. AJ Tapia contributed timely run production as well, adding to what became a complete offensive showing from top to bottom.
Even when McMurry attempted to rally and string together offense of its own, Howard Payne answered. A six-run fifth inning created even more breathing room, and additional late insurance runs ensured there would be no dramatic comeback under the Abilene lights.
It was one of those nights where the dugout energy never dipped and the lineup felt contagious, one hit sparking the next. Every trip through the order brought more traffic on the bases, more momentum, more noise from the visiting side.
"We were aggressive from the first pitch," said head coach Stephen Lynn. "Putting up nine in the first inning on the road says a lot about our approach. The guys weren't waiting around, they were attacking."
Lynn credited the lineup's depth and consistency throughout the night.
"When you put up 19 runs on 21 hits, that's not just one guy having a big night. That's everybody passing the baton. We had quality at-bats up and down the order, we stayed disciplined, and we kept the pressure on them every inning."
By the final out, Howard Payne had authored one of its most explosive offensive performances of the season, leaving Abilene with a statement road win and a stat sheet that read like a fireworks display. The Jackets will return to action on Friday, February 27th and Saturday, February 28th for a 3-game homestand against Southwestern University.
