Howard Payne battles through tough road weekend at Texas Lutheran

HPU finds bright spots despite road setbacks

Howard Payne baseball battled through a challenging three-game road stretch at Texas Lutheran over the weekend, showing offensive flashes and individual standouts despite coming up short in the series.

Game one opened Friday night with the Yellow Jackets collecting 12 hits in a 16-6 final. Howard Payne's lineup found rhythm in the middle innings, highlighted by a three-run fourth that briefly cut into the deficit. N. Gulamhuse paced the offense with three hits and an RBI, while J. Lile added two hits and drove in two runs. J. Mackenzie also delivered a two-hit performance with an RBI, and H. Pope contributed a run-scoring double as part of the Jackets' extra-base production. Howard Payne added two more runs in the seventh, continuing to compete offensively through the final frame.

Saturday's doubleheader presented more opportunities for growth as the Jackets continued to string together quality at-bats across both contests.

In game two, Howard Payne once again produced traffic on the bases and timely swings from the heart of the order. Multiple Jackets recorded hits as the offense worked counts and forced defensive pressure. Run production came in key moments, with the lineup showing depth from top to bottom despite the final result.

The series finale saw continued fight from Howard Payne, particularly at the plate. The Jackets generated scoring chances and saw productive outings from several returning contributors and developing bats. Consistent contact and situational hitting allowed Howard Payne to stay competitive deep into innings while gaining valuable early-season experience against a conference opponent.

Across the weekend, Gulamhuse emerged as one of the most consistent offensive pieces, leading the Jackets in hits during the series while setting the table for run production. Lile also stood out with multiple RBI performances, providing punch in the middle of the order. Mackenzie and Pope added key extra-base hits, while contributions from Prestage, McNair, and Chapman helped round out the offensive effort.

Defensively and on the mound, the weekend provided important reps for Howard Payne's pitching staff, with multiple arms seeing innings as the Jackets continue building depth and command early in the season.

While the results did not fall in their favor, the Jackets showed offensive capability, lineup balance, and continued competitiveness throughout the series. With conference play still unfolding, Howard Payne will look to build on the positives and turn weekend lessons into momentum moving forward.
