Howard Payne Beats Storm and Schreiner in Doubleheader Nightcap

Yellow Jackets Weather Lightning Delay to Earn Doubleheader Split

Howard Payne bounced back in the second game of Thursday's doubleheader with a 7-6 win over Schreiner after dropping the opening contest earlier in the day. The nightcap was interrupted by a lengthy lightning delay, stretching the game to four hours, but the Yellow Jackets stayed composed and held on late to secure the split.

Howard Payne finished with 10 hits and built an early cushion with runs in each of the first four innings. Landon Prestage helped spark the offense early with an RBI double in the first inning that tied the game, while Jace MacKenzie delivered a key two-RBI single in the second inning to push the Yellow Jackets in front.

Braden Franks led the way offensively for HPU, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs, including an RBI double in the third inning and another RBI single in the fourth. AJ Tapia added a strong performance at the plate as well, finishing 1-for-2 with two walks, a run scored, and an RBI. MacKenzie contributed with a hit and two RBIs, while Skyler Fields and Joshua Lile each recorded hits during the Jackets' 10-hit effort.

On the mound, Brant Wilson turned in a solid start, working 7.0 innings while allowing four runs, only two earned, and striking out five. Trevor Rangel handled the eighth inning before Tyler George came on in the ninth and closed the door with a scoreless frame to secure the victory.

Schreiner mounted a late push with five runs in the eighth inning to trim the Howard Payne lead to one, but the Yellow Jackets were able to regroup and finish the game off in the ninth to claim the 7-6 victory.

"We had a long day with the delay and the doubleheader, but I was proud of how our guys stayed locked in," said Howard Payne head coach Stephen Lynn. "We did a great job jumping out early and getting big hits when we needed them, and our pitchers made enough plays down the stretch to finish it off."

Howard Payne moves forward after splitting the doubleheader and will look to carry the momentum from the game two win into a 'winner take all' third game on Friday evening.
