Howard Payne traveled to Abilene, Texas on March 6 for a women's tennis doubleheader against Oklahoma Wesleyan and battled through a challenging day on the courts. Despite the results, the Yellow Jackets found several bright spots across both matches, highlighted by strong singles performances and competitive sets throughout the lineup.
In the opening match, Kendra Werlein turned in one of the top performances of the day for Howard Payne. Competing at No. 4 singles, Werlein controlled the match from start to finish, earning a convincing 6-0, 6-2 victory. Nina Delafuente also delivered a competitive showing at No. 3 singles, pushing her opening set to a tiebreak before eventually falling in straight sets. In doubles play, the pairing of Nina Delafuente and Victoria Ramos battled to a tight 7-5 decision at the No. 2 position.
Howard Payne continued to fight in the second match of the day with several close singles contests. Victoria Ramos put together one of the most competitive matches of the afternoon, bouncing back to claim the second set and forcing a match tiebreak before narrowly coming up short. Delafuente also rallied in her singles match, responding with a strong second-set win to push the contest to a deciding tiebreak.
Head coach Josh Lopez said the team showed determination throughout the long day of competition.
"I'm proud of how our players kept competing through two matches in one day," Lopez said. "Kendra had a great win for us in singles, and we had several matches where our players battled back and forced third-set tiebreaks. There's a lot of fight in this group, and those moments show the progress we're continuing to make."
