SAN ANTONIO, Texas- The Howard Payne University women's tennis team completed the Fall portion of its season by competing at the 2026 ITA DIII Women's Southwest Regional Championships over the weekend.
SINGLES
Junior
Kendra Werlein competed in Flight B and defeated Sonnae Garcia (Schreiner) 6-1, 6-2; Makenzie Newell (UMHB) 7-5, 6-3; and Cambrey Johnson (LeTourneau) 6-3, 7-6 before falling to Allison Goggans (HSU) 2-6, 2-6 in the Final.
Senior
Kaylee Mcleod competed in Flight C and defeated Bailey Quillen (Austin College) 6-1, 6-1 before losing to Christa Bennett (HSU) 1-6, 1-6 in the quarterfinals.
Freshman
Kaci Roberts competed in Flight C and was defeated by the Flight runner-up Patricia Rosales (TLU) 0-6, 0-6.
Freshman
Julia Lightner competed in the Championship Draw and defeated Lucero Alvarado (TLU) 6-0, 6-0; Lily Alvarado (Southwestern) 6-2, 6-2; before losing to Lauren Tin (Trinity) 2-6, 2-6 in the round of 16.
Junior
Hannah Lightner competed in the Championship Draw and defeated Avery Williams (UMHB) 7-6, 5-7, 10-4; before losing to Kynley Craddock (HSU) 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 in the round of 32.
Freshman
Caroline White competed in the Championship Draw and was defeated by Julina Torchia (Trinity) 2-6, 1-6 in the round of 64.
DOUBLES
Hannah Lightner and
Julia Lightner competed in Championship Doubles. The Lightner sisters beat Liana Herrera and Nataly Velasco (UST) 8-3; Breanna Taylor and Jaelyn Walker (UMHB) 8-5; Allison Vo and Katie-Lynn Hoang (Trinity) 8-7; before losing to Championship Doubles Champions Rosabella Andrade and Eva Kovachev (Trinity) 2-8 in the semi-finals.
Up Next: The Howard Payne University women's tennis team will now look toward the Spring part of their season when the team travels to Fort Worth to take on Texas Wesleyan University at the Arlington Tennis Center on February 5 at 10:00 AM.
