Coby Gipson

Coby Gipson came to Howard Payne in the spring of 2017 after serving as the head football coach at T.K. Gorman high school in Tyler, Texas from 2012 through 2016 guiding the Crusaders to their most successful seasons in over 50 years.

Since at HPU, Coach Gipson's offenses have finished 5th in the American Southwest Conference in rushing yards per game in 2017 and set the HPU record for completions in a game with 39 in 2018. He was the position coach for the only freshman on the ALL-ASC 1st Team in the 2017 season.

In 2018, his offense finished 3rd in the conference in completion % and his top receiver Duntayvion Gross led the conference in receptions (68), and in single game receptions (13 –Twice)

While at Bishop Gorman, Gipson led the team to Area and Regional Championships and to a TAPPS State Semi-Final appearance in 2014. Bishop Gorman had a combined record of 28-17 in 2013-2016 with the highest winning percentage over four seasons in the 58 year history of the program.

in 2016, Crusader WR Judah Bell had the 2nd most receiving yards in a season in Texas HS Football History, and was a Parade All American before signing with SMU

QB Jake Smith tied the state record with 10 TD Passes in a game vs Ore City in a 91-71 win
 
In the high school ranks, he coached 3 All-State QB's, 7 All-State WR's, 2 All-State RBs, 4 All-State OL while at Grace and TK Gorman. Gipson also coached in the highest scoring 11 man football games in Texas in 2015 and 2016.

Gipson’s offensive units have ranked 1st in East Texas in Total Offense in (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016) and finished 1st in East Texas in Yards Per Game (2010, 2014, 2015, 2016) and in the top five Yards Per Game and Points Per Game (2007 – 2016).

Before Bishop Gorman, Gipson served as the Offensive Coordinator at Grace Community High School in Tyler, Texas. There he was a part of a staff that was named the TAPPS District 2 coaching staff of the year in 2010 and 2011.

Gipson was an assistant coach at Pine Tree high school in Longview, Texas before his time a Grace Community, working as an assistant football and baseball coach.

Coby has also worked in football outside of the school setting serving as the head coach of the FCA Heart of a Champion Bowl in 2016, offensive coordinator in 2011, and as the bowl game’s assistant director from 2011-2016. He was also honored with the 2016-2017 FCA Influence Award.

He has worked numerous Nike East Texas/Jeff Traylor Passing Academies since 2008 and served on the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Meeting Room Committee from 2012 to the present.

He has been a featured speaker at the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) Convention in 2018 and a featured Chalk Talk speaker at the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Convention in 2019.



Coby was also a part of the college softball scene working as an assistant softball coach at the University of Texas at Tyler from 2007 to 2016. He was on the staff of UT-Tyler’s 2016 NCAA III National Championship team.

Gipson is a 2002 graduate of LeTourneau University with a Bachelor of Business Administration and a 2013 graduate of Concordia University – Irvine with a Masters of Collegiate Athletic Administration and Coaching.

Coby and his wife, Christy, have one daughter, Camryn and one son, Connor.
