Josh Spicely

Joshua Spicely joined the Howard Payne coaching staff in July of 2019 as the graduate assistant linebackers coach under Head Coach Braxton Harris. In February of 2020, Spicely was promoted to full-time linebackers coach.
 
Spicely came to Howard Payne from NCAA-DI University of Colorado in Boulder, CO where he served as the student assistant defensive line coach from August of 2017- June of 2019. Spicely also served as a volunteer recruiting assistant.
 
During his time at Colorado, Spicely had the pleasure of coaching Javier Edwards who initially was an undrafted free agent for the Houston Texans in 2018, now with the Arizona Cardinals. Along with Javier, Spicely coached George Frazier V, who was an undrafted free agent for the Chicago Bears in 2017. Spicely also coached Mustafa Johnson, who is currently ranked 10th in CU history for tackles for losses.
 
Before the University of Colorado, Spicely served as the assistant running backs/linebackers coach at Fairview High School in Boulder, CO (2016). Fairview High School was the 21st ranked team in Colorado at the time and were 2nd round state playoff contenders. Spicely coached one linebacker named to 1st Team Defense All-League, one linebacker named to 2nd Team Defense All-League, and one running back to 2nd Team Offense All-League.
 
As a player, Spicely was at Colorado State University-Pueblo, where his team was the RMAC Conference Champions (2014), D2 National Champions (2014), the first team in program history to win a national championship, as well as the first team to shut out another team in the national championship since 1997.
 
Spicely earned his bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of Colorado in 2018 and is currently earning his master’s degree from Howard Payne.
