Scott Clough joined the Howard Payne coaching staff in March of 2016 as offensive coordinator under head football coach Hunter Sims. 

Clough came to Howard Payne from NCAA D-III Southern Virginia University in Buena Vista, Virginia where he was the offensive coordinator from 2014-2015.

Before Southern Virginia, he served three years at NAIA Bacone College in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Clough was at NCAA D-II Angelo State University as associate head coach and offensive coordinator from 2005-2011. 

Clough also had coached at Tyler Junior College, where he served as the Apaches’ offensive coordinator from 1999-2004.  His offense helped lead Tyler to the 2001 conference title, four runner-up finishes and five bowl game appearances.

He also has significant postseason experience, coaching in the Red River Bowl in 2000 and 2001, the Heart of Texas Bowl in 2003 and 2004 and made NCAA Division II playoff appearances in 1990 (Northern Colorado) and 2006 (Angelo State).



Throughout his coaching career, Clough has trained players at almost every position and at nearly every level.  He served as offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach and special teams coach at NCAA D-II Midwestern State University from 1995-98, assistant coach at Mesa State College from 1991-94, and assistant coach for quarterbacks, receivers, tackles and tight ends at the NCAA D-I University of Northern Colorado from 1988-90.

On the defensive side of the ball, Clough coached linebackers and defensive backs.  He also tutored running backs as a volunteer graduate assistant and then full-time assistant at NCAA D-I Colorado State University from 1983-88.

As a player, Clough was at Colorado State University, where he earned Academic All-Western Athletic Conference laurels in 1982.  A three-time WAC Scholar-Athlete designee, he was also nominated for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship after his career concluded at CSU.

Clough earned his bachelor’s degree from Colorado State in 1983 and his master’s degree in exercise physiology from CSU in 1990. 

He and his wife, Janet, have two children, Susie and D.J.
