HPU 1-3 Loss To McM

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne volleyball team lost in four sets, 1-3 (15-25,25-19,12-25,23-25) to McMurry University in an American Southwest Conference West Division match at Brownwood Coliseum.

McMurry took set one 15-25 but Howard Payne rallied to take set two 25-19. A slow start for the Lady Jackets in set three led to McMurry winning the set 12-25.

The decisive fourth set was a back-and-forth affair as both teams were tied at 14 near the midway point. McMurry then created a little separation as they led 21-17 before Howard Payne fought back to win six out of the next seven points to give the Yellow Jackets a 23-22 lead. But McMurry then won the next three volleys to take the set (and subsequently the match).

Howard Payne was led by Tamika Heline and Amanda Gutierrez with 13 and 11 kills respectively. Heline also added 16 digs. Two other HPU players had 16 digs, Kristin Hammond and Patricia Brown. Brown had 23 assists along with Amy Crouch's 20.

McMurry was led by Terah Brown with 17 kills and Shannon Higgins 24 assists.

The Lady Jackets fall to 14-12 and 7-10 in ASC action, while McMurry moved to 18-6 overall and 12-4 in ASC West play.
