Jackets Fail To Answer In Ninth, Fall To Sul Ross

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Yellow Jackets got out hit 14-17 by Sul Ross State and dropped the first game of the series 8-13 on Friday at Don Shepard Park Friday afternoon in American Southwest Conference action. 

After two quick outs in the top of the first the Jackets gave up an error allowing Sul Ross to pound out three singles scoring 2 runs. Howard Payne also scored 2 runs in the first off of a single by Jordan Hammontree and a double by Taylor Zambreski. The Jackets give up 3 more runs in the second and 1 in the third. 

Down 2-6 the Jackets came out in the bottom of third swinging the bat. Garrett Isom led off with a single to right field followed by a Blake Shaffer triple. Cale Thompson drew a walk. Royce Rodriquez comes up with an RBI single putting the Jackets within one. After a scoreless fifth and sixth on both ends Howard Payne knocked in 4 runs in the sixth to put them ahead of Sul Ross 8-6. 

The Lobos tied it up in the eighth off of three doubles. The Jackets struggled to answer back and go into the last inning 8-8. Three pitchers, two walks, one error and one grand slam allowed Sul Ross to take back a healthy lead over the Jackets 8-13. Howard Payne failed to score in the bottom of ninth and drop game one. 

Hammontree, Thompson, and Dustin Climer all went 2-4 for the Jackets. Shaffer knocked in 2 RBI. For Sul Ross Eric Mata and James Johnson went 3-5 and Javier Arrieta had 6 RBI. Yellow Jacket pitcher James May took the loss and Eddie Vela grabbed the win for Sul Ross. 

Howard Payne drops to 11-14 overall and 4-6 in ASC play while Sul Ross State improves to 3-25 overall and 2-8 in ASC Play. 

The Jackets will finish up their home series against Sul Ross tomorrow at 1:00 and 3:00.
